Chapter 2. Overview of search keys

Enter the following index names (3 capital or lower-case letters) in the search bar just before the term for which you are searching :

Enter TLL in the search bar, in order to search by title words. Avoid entering stop words. (See, “Search modes, articles, prepositions and other stop words”)

Example : tll brouillard pont tolbiac

Enter SUB in the search bar, in order to search by subject words.

Examples :

sub eugénisme

sub révolution française

Enter AUT in the search bar, in order to search for authors by words. This key is useful for finding an author where the complete name of the author is not known. You can cross-search a family name and a first name, use masks or truncation.

Examples :

aut jelloun

aut tahar jelloun

aut tahar ben jelloun.

Enter PRS in the search bar, in order to search by name of person (family name, which can be followed by first name, initials, prefixes and dates) To find all the varieties or developments of a first name, use truncation after the first letter of the first name.

Example :

prs flaubert

prs flaubert, g?

The search key PER applies to the person who wrote the publication, as well as to the person which the publication is about.

Example :

prs smith, william*

Allows you to find documents of which William Smith is the author, as well as documents about William Smith

Enter COR in the search bar, in order to search for the publications of an organisation or community.

Example :

cor agence bibliographique de l'enseignement supérieur

Enter FTL in the search bar, before the complete title (and sub-title if necessary) of the publication you are searching for. Omit the initial article. It is possible to flip through (browse) this index to obtain an overview of all titles starting with a chosen term.

Examples :

ftl international journal of politics, culture and society

ftl brouillard au pont de tolbiac

Enter ABT in the search bar, then the abbreviated title to search for periodical titles. The abbreviations are followed by a full stop to obtain an answer more quickly.

Examples :

abt j. pharm. chim.

Enter SER in the search bar, in order to search collected titles as well as work published in these series

Examples :

ser Que sais-je

ser Advances in Computer Science.

Enter PUB in the search bar, followed by the Publisher’s name. The index contains the complete name of the publisher as it appears in the publication

Example :

pub elsevier This will search for all publications where the name of the publisher contains « elsevier »

Use quotation marks to find the exact name of a publisher. Example :

pub "robert laffont"

Enter DIS in the search bar, in order to make a search in the field of notes to records describing dissertations (theses). This area contains amongst other elements, the place where the dissertation was defended, the discipline, date, etc.

Examples :

dis lyon 2

dis philosophie lyon

Enter NNT in the search bar, in order to search for records describing the thesis identified by this particular number. A national thesis number is ascribed to each french thesis, as a way to identify it. It is made up of 3 segments (4 characters each) : date, university code, sequential number.

Examples :

nnt 2002PAUU1002

nnt 2010NICE ? to find any thesis defended in 2010 in Nice university

Enter AWN in the search bar, in order to search by Award notes

Examples :

awn goncourt

awn prix

Enter ABS in the search bar, in order to search for a publication by words in its abstract. This field is mainly found in descriptive records for dissertations (theses)

Example :

abs homologies séquence

Enter ALL in the search bar in order to search by words simultaneously in all the indexed zones of the record, without having to distinguish between the indexes (titles, subject, authors, abstracts, etc).

Examples :

all albanie will find all records with the word "albanie" in the title, or in the subject words, or in the summary…

all clinton politique étrangère

Enter VMA in the search bar, this search giving the same result as subject search (See the chapter : “starting an advanced search by subject” in the section “searching some clicks”)

Enter BKS in the search bar in order to make a search in the record zones reserved for notes on the description of old books.

Example :

bks reliure basane

Enter RPC in the search bar in order to search for words in the record zone for notes on the copy.

Example :

rpc picasso

for an example signed by Picasso

Enter PER in the search bar in order to search by words of related titles to bibliographic records ; this search is only made if the title cited in the link zone is not present in Sudoc or if the link has not been created.

Example :

per monothéisme

Enter ISB in the search bar in order to search by the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) which identifies the work. The number can be entered with or without hyphens

Enter ISN in the search bar in order to search by the ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) which identifies the work. The number can be entered with or without hyphens

Enter SUW followed by a subject word in English.

Example :

suw christian union

Records are indexed with the aid of English medical key-words, MESH indexing. Enter MSH in the search bar followed by the MESH keyword that is being searched.

Example :

msh cancer

Enter LNI in the search bar, followed by the language code searched for (the language code is composed of three characters conforming to the ISO 639-2 norm table. It is possible to flip through (browse) the index to display the complete list of codes. Be aware that some languages will bring back too many records from the base (Example fra : français) so a direct search is not possible using their code. In this case use advanced search and the language as a search filter.

Below are some examples of language codes : to find all codes, go to annex A of the Unimarc manual (5th Edition) or the Library of Congress site.

Enter GEO before the code of the country searched (the country code is composed of two characters conforming to the norm ISO 3166/MA) It is possible to flip through (browse) the index to display the complete list of codes. Be aware that some countries will bring back too many records from the base (Example fr : France) so a direct search is not possible using their code. In this case use advanced search and the country as a search filter.
